2010 November
Here’s the second day’s work on the Boston skyline piece. It’s starting to come together, although still quite rough. My client also informed me that the Charles River has never, ever been blue, so I’ll have to really make the river look “natural.” Should be interesting. I looked at our own Cumberland for inspiration, but that dirty brown was just not all that appealing. I will have to figure something else out. More as this develops. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s the early stages of a new commission piece for a client. This is the skyline in Boston, and my client is from there, so that makes sense. It’s pretty large, a 30×40, so there is a lot of work to do on this one. I think it will be okay, though. By the way, hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving holiday. As you could tell, I took off a few days, but now I’m back and ready for the run to Christmas. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
This is one I did sometime back after seeing this amazing sunset while at Cheekwood here in Nashville. It’s now in the law offices of Pepper & Brothers, which is pretty neat. This morning is rainy, so I thought this would be appropriate. I may have to do one of these again. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Kind of a crazy weekend at the studio. The Junior League’s annual “Tis the Season” Christmas sale was going on at the Factory, so there were a lot of people. I did not get much of a chance to work on anything Friday or Saturday, but it was fun talking to so many folks. Anyway, here’s what little I got done, working on the double cat portrait a little. This is a holiday week, so I won’t get as much done as usual. More later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s the finished night landscape I posted up a couple of weeks back. I finally got the chance to finish it out, and it turned out quite well. The foreground trees have a lot of detail, and the background really goes into the darkness. I added a little bit of moonlit cloud at the top, and that rounded it out. This one is actually already sold, and I’ll hang it for my client today. Pretty pleased with this one. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s an update on Killian. I’ve got her fur blocked in. Now the final stages will involve putting more texture and form on her. I should get that done soon, then she’ll be ready to go to her person. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s a new abstract I just did. I think it’s finished, though I’m not totally sure. I’ll need to go in today and see if there is anything missing. This one is quite large, a 36×48, and very impressive. It may not stay around long, since I have someone already interested in it. More when it tells me what the title is. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s the beginning of a new double cat portrait. Again, started with the eyes and nose. Next I’ll work on getting the coat right. I’ve found that what really distinguishes our furry friends are the eyes and nose, so they come first and must be right. I think I’ve got these guys pretty well. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s Ernie, the last of the three little animal paintings I was doing as a semi-protest of all the flat, cartoonish paintings showing up out there. It’s intersting that each of my three have gotten a little more realistic. I just can’t seem to get away from the notion that one of the best things about art is that it can make reality more real than the real thing. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I actually got a little time yesterday to paint, so here’s the first stages on a new pet portrait. I thought I would show the early stages. First is the drawing, mostly to establish shape, and then I start with the eyes and nose and work out from there. So the second frame shows the color in the eyes and nose. I’ll probably tweak the eyes and nose a little later on, but they are basically in place now. Next will come the coat, then the whiskers and any details. Thought you might like to see how these things really go. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
