2010 April

Couldn’t resist the bad joke.  I have three pet portraits in the works now.  This is the second one, Hooper.  He’s a really cute beagle.  This is the underdrawing, and of course, the color will go over this.  More as this develops.  The one dog drawing will come up Monday.  Dont’ forget to come out Saturday night for the Art PM event at the Factory in Franklin.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Please come out this Saturday to the Factory at Franklin for the first of our summer art series.  This event is themed “May Bouquet” and the artists will have works featuring florals to herald the season.  We will also have entertainment, wine and finger foods.  The reception is 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and there is no admission.  Come out and enjoy some great art and have some fun.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Here’s the first color sketch on a new four part piece.  This will be a loose landscape in the acrylic 3D effect I’ve been working with for the last few months.  The panels are 24×36, so this will end up being a large room sized piece.  This is going to turn out well; I can tell already.  Now I’ve just got to get it done.  More as it develops.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Meet Tequila.  He is a rescued greyhound, and I get to do his portrait.  I met him last week at the studio at the Factory in Franklin.  He is a very sweet dog.  So I feel really good about getting to do his portrait.  This is the underdrawing, and I’ll start putting the color on later in the week.  More as this develops.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Here’s a new landscape that’s just about finished.  There may be a few more tweaks, but basically, it’s done.  This one is another with the multi-layer glazing technique that gives it a lot of depth and a 3D effect.  I love this technique; it’s really unique and different.  This piece is a 20×24, so it’s a decent size and has a black gallery wrap so it hangs without a frame.  Come see it at the studio in the Factory at Franklin, or contact me.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Sorry about the fuzzy photo.  I’ll try and post a better one later.  This is a new little landscape I did this week.  Did it with the knife so it has some texture, but it’s realitively soft.  Has a nice presentation.  I have it in a really neat little frame.  Come by and see it at the studio in the Factory at Franklin.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Here’s another floral done with the painting knife.  This one is a little warmer in tone than the other one, with more reds in it.  I thought it came out pretty well.  I am enjoying these with the knives.  Gets lots of texture to the painting, which is kind of cool.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Here’s a new piece I just did.  This is a heavy impasto knife painting, with lots of texture.  The colors are a little muted so that it is not “wild.”  It does have a nice feel, though.  I’ve got it framed up nicely and ready to go.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

This is the piece I did Sunday during the outdoor session.  It is very rough, of course, since I did it in about 45 minutes.  That’s one of the problems with outside painting:  you have to move really fast.  On something like the skyline, that means moving quickly without a lot of details.  Still, there is a certain vitality to it because of the rapidity of the painting.  This is a 12×24, so it’s a decent size.  Kind of fun doing it.  I may have to try this again and focus on a specific building more.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Several of my students and I had a great Sunday.  We went down to the Cumberland River near LP Field and set up and painted out of doors.  The view across the river to downtown Nashville was really quite spectacular.  The weather was great, though a bit windy, and we had a good couple of hours painting.  When we finished with that, we went to the Frist and saw the European Masters show, and that was great, too.  Wonderful way to spend a Sunday with art.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net
