2009 December
Happy New Year to everyone. 2009 has been a difficult year for us all. I look forward to improvements in every sector in 2010. I leave you with this piece, “In Tuscana,” which I’m donating to the Nashville Opera to assist in their fundraising. Good to end a bad year with charity. I’ll be off until January 4, so have a safe and Happy New Year. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
This piece is finally starting to take shape. I got most of the sky and mountains done yesterday, and a little on the water. Still more details to pull together, so more later. Hope you are enjoying the process on this one. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s the next update on the nautical piece. I got the second ship mostly done, and started blocking in the background. It’s starting to work pretty well, I think. You may notice I also changed the light on the first ship and the pennant to make it more consistant. I should be able to work on the background today and have another update tomorrow. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I hope you don’t get too tired of this one. It is what I’m working on over the holiday break, so it’s what will be here. This is the first stage on the nautical painting I’ve put the sketch and drawing for on here the last few days. Now the first ship has a good start. May be more details as it develops. The first picture shows the ship in context; the second is a close up of the ship. This is really pretty interesting, doing the ships. So more as this develops. I hope to be done with it by New Years Day. We’ll see, since this is a big piece and a big project. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s the underdrawing for the new commission piece I’m starting. I took the sketch and expanded it to a 30×40 canvas, and added all the detail to the foreground ships. Now it’s just a matter of getting the color on the canvas. More as that develops. In the meantime, I’ll be taking off from the blog a few days for the holidays. So, to everyone, happy holidays, and may your season be warm and cherry. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s a sketch for a new commission piece I’ll start on today. It is to be a nautical scene with an oriental theme. Should be very interesting to do the old ships and such. I’ll get the drawing on the canvas done today, hopefully, and more as this one develops. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s how “Regatta” looks in my clients’ home. The breakup of the pieces does prevent it from being overwhelming, yet it flows. In fact, the horizontal breaks tend to make you look bottom to top, just like we planned. To quote an old TV show, I love it when a plan comes together. My clients’ were very happy with the piece, as was I. I love being able to add to the living space of good people. That pretty much makes it all worthwhile. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s the final version of the three part piece I posted a few days ago. I added a lot to the hills, finished the water with reflections, and did details on the boats and sails. You probably can’t see it in this photo, but there are a couple of sailors on the boats. I go later today to hang this and see how it looks on the wall. I’ll do an update with that later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s a new piece I’ve been playing with off and on for a few days. It’s kind of interesting, since it has some romantic forest elements mixed with a lot of texture and kind of a webbing or root-like pattern throughout. At first I wasn’t sure about this one, but when I stood back and looked, it’s quite striking. I’ll put the finishing varnishes on today and this one will be ready to go. Come by and see it at the Studio in the Factory at Franklin. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s the final version of the figure portrait. I think it turned out really well, and my client was very excited. She even wanted me to post a photo of me with the finished painting. I am very pleased that she liked it and hope that the ultimate recepient will like it, too. This one was fun, and I look forward to doing more such paintings. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
