2009 November

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.  I’m working on studies for a couple of big commission pieces, and a couple of big abstract pieces, so here is a little watercolor study I did for one of the commission proposals.  The basic idea will be a sailboat (actually three in the big version).  This little watercolor study gives the basic idea of the boat, ocean and the hilly shoreline in the background.  It’s very useful to try out something before committing to a big canvas.   I liked the idea so much I’m doing a spec piece with the boats as well.  More as that develops.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Here is a new little landscape painting I did the other day.  “By the Lake” is a nice soft lake scene.  Pleasant and not too wild.  This is only a 9×12, so it’s a nice little size.  I have this for sale, so come by and see it and take it home.  I’ll be taking off from the website for Thanksgiving, so no posts until next Monday.  In the meantime, come by and see me at the Factory.  Happy Thanksgiving.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Here’s the final version of the kids that went out to my client.  She liked it a lot.  We only made one small change to it before it left.  This one was a challenge, but I’m pretty happy with the end results.  I guess I’ll work on more portraits.  They are a good way to develop painting skills.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Here’s a piece I’ve had for a little while.  Strange how suddenly people start to notice it.  Last week I have several people really drawn to it.  I called it “Alice in Wonderland, or Through the Wormhole” and just usually shorten that to “Wormhole.”  I got fascinated by the idea that there is a place where time and space do not exist and you can move vast distances instantaneously.  So that’s where the idea for this came from.  It’s a pretty cool piece.  Come see it and take it home.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

I had students pretty much all day yesterday, and did get to work on the kids’ portrait some, but did not get it finished.  So here is another older piece, “Braid.”  This is a figure painting in oil, and done in a classic style.  Very smooth blending on the skin tones to make it both realistic and soft.  This is a neat piece.  It’s size is 12×24, and is framed in a classic molding.  Come by and see it.  And take it home.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

This one seems to be just slogging along.  I am really working hard to get the kids accurately, so it’s taking a while.  Still, it is progressing and turning out pretty cool.  If I can keep up the work schedule, it may well be done by this weekend.  Sorry there is nothing else new but this; this one is occupying my time.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Tuesday is teaching all day, so no new work yesterday.  Here is a figure/portrait piece I did a while back, called “Contemplation.”  This is a 20 by 20 square piece, and is framed nicely.  This is a really powerful piece, both for the pose and the skin tones.  Price on this one is $750, and is a steal at that price.  If you are looking for “old master” style oil paintings, this is it.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Here’s an experimental acrylic landscape I’ve been playing with for several days.  This involves lots of layers of different kinds of materials.  The first layer is a watercolor like layer, and the colors and shapes in that layer are very soft and muted.  The next layer has more texture and gloss, and the final layer has lots of texture and is very glossy.  This makes it look very deep in person.  I like the effect very much, and will experiment with this more soon.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

This is making slow progress, since I had the Westhaven show and teaching and such last week.  I did get the child on the left of the photo about 85% done on Friday.  I still need to touch up the hair more.  Today I should get a chance to work for several hours on this piece, so there will be an update later.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

We had another art show and sale last night at the Westhaven Residents’ Club in Franklin.  This is my corner.  We had a good turnout and a great time.  Westhaven is such a wonderful neighborhood.  Everyone is very supportive of the residents and the arts.  Thanks to the Westhaven staff for the assistance with the show.  And of course, thanks to my students who worked really hard to put this together and to create great artwork.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net
