2009 July
I got to work on this piece yesterday, and put in the poppies. I am calling this “semifinal” because I may want to make a few minor tweaks when it’s dry. Otherwise, this is pretty much how the final version will look. Turned out pretty good. Hopefully, by next week, I’ll have new work for you to see. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I got to work on the background yesterday and punched up the elements pretty well. Now, when this is dry, the poppies will go on the foreground and disappear back toward the buildings. This one is working pretty well. Next update should be the final. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is an invitation to an art show at Monthaven Mansion in Hendersonville. The Hendersonville Arts Council is sponsoring the show. The opening reception is Friday, August 7 from 6:30 to 8:30. I’m not in the show per se, but of the 25 artists in the show, 5 are present or former students of mine. So is one respect, I feel a personal element to this show and wish my students very well. Come out and see the art work. It should be a good show. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is the underpainting for a new landscape I am doing on commission. The final version will have poppies in the foreground going back to the buildings. This is only the first layer, so there is still a lot to do. Should be pretty good, though, when done. More later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is a new abstract I just did. “Connection” attempts to visualize the moment when neurons connect to form a new idea or skill, or insight. I have this idea that the neurons are always working toward making new connections, at least if we are still mentally active, and that must be a dramatic kind of thing in the brain. So this is kind of that idea, visually represented. This is a 20×24 and is very dramatic. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
While I’m disapponted that I did not get first place for the second year, I did receive the second place award for the 2009 Toast of Music City Awards. I am very honored to be considered by the readers for this award, and thank everyone who voted for me. Like the ads of old, since I’m in second place, I’ll have to try harder! jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s the final version on the two kids I posted earlier. I think they turned out pretty well. It was actually quite challenging to get the kids to look like the photos. It was also quite difficult since all I had was a snapshot from years ago, and they are much more mature now. Anyway, I think they will be pleased with this. Now on to a poppy field landscape for a client. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s a real watercolor painting I did a while ago. Often, I use acrylics to get a watercolor effect; they work quite well on paper. This one is a real watercolor, though, and one that turned out pretty well in a medium I’m just not that familiar with. I still have this at the studio, and is priced at $125 framed. Come by and see it. jcannnon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s one that is a good summer beach painting. They have summer beach books, so why not a painting? This is a 12×16 on canvas, and is gallery wrapped with a deep edge so it does not need a frame. This one is at the studio at the Factory in Franklin, and available to take home for $95. Great deal on an original painting. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I got to work on the portrait of the kids, but my old camera croaked out and I could not get photos of the update. I’ll get those later in the week. In the meantime, here is a photo of a piece I did related to Arrington Vineyards. This photo shows it as framed, so you get the full picture of, well, the picture. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
