It’s that time again: The Toast of Music City contest. This is a “best of” contest by The Tennessean newspaper. Last year, I was very honored to be voted “Best Local Artist (Visual).” I am asking for your vote again this year. This is a great honor, and I am humbled by being chosen best in the first year of the contest, and would like to repeat. So go to www.toastofmusiccity.com and vote for me in the visual artist category. You can vote early and often, so please help me repeat with this award. Thank you for your vote. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
No art this morning, sort of. I’m still working on the floral, but should be done with that shortly. Instead, here is the flyer for a children’s juried art contest we will be beginning next week at the Artfusion event. This is a contest for kids, with some cool prizes. It’s juried, which means that the artists of The Row @ The Factory will be judging the art. If you have kids, this would be a great way to encourage creativity during the summer. Come by the event June 5 or 6, and pick up an application. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s another older piece that I’ve always liked. “Girl in the Lavender Hat” is the title. I think I always like poses that are mysterious, that raise questions. Looking at her, you wonder “What’s she looking at?” “What has caught her attention?” That kind of thing always attracts me in a painting. So this is one I’ve always liked. It’s a 16×20, and is still at the studio. Come by to see it. Don’t forget that event on June 5 and 6, which would be a good time to see all these works. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is an update on the bouquet piece I showed you last week. I was pretty sick for several days, so I did not get to get back to work on it until late in the week, but here is a progress report. This is a 20×24, so it’s a pretty good sized piece, and pretty complicated. Still, making progress and should be finished this week. When framed, this will go over my client’s mantel. Since it’s her wedding bouquet, this will make for a great piece of art that will give her a great feeling every time she sees it. More as it develops. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s another older piece, that I still have. This one is not very cheery, but tells a story. The title is “When the News Came.” I painted this after a good friend of mine lost her brother to a lengthy battle with cancer. She was devastated, and I wanted to capture that moment when things happen and all you can do is take them in and try to get through it. So I set this up and painted it. I think the posture of the figure is about right. I was especially happy with little things, like the shadows on the chair. Anyway, this is a 16×20 and is at the studio. If you are interested, come by or contact me. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I am still down, but should be able to get back to the studio tomorrow. Here is an older landscape I did a while ago. I was exploring colors and shapes for moody effects. This one was done with a very limited sienna or earth toned palette. It does have a pretty moody effect. I have it framed in a nice gold frame so the piece looks very rich. This one I still have, but is at our office, so if you are interested, contact me to view at the studio. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Well, I don’t want to whine, so let’s just say this has been a bad week. I’ve been really sick the last three days, and have not left the house, much less done any art work. So the best new thing I can show this morning is this work in progress I started last week. This is a portrait of a client’s wedding bouquet, and this is still an early stage. When (or if) I get better, I’ll get back to work on this and post the progress. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is an invitation to an upcoming event at the Factory in Franklin. Art Fusion 2009 is a joint event between the Artists of The Row @ The Factory and the Arts Council of Williamson County. There will be approximately 20 visiting artists from the Arts Council, in adddition to the 11 on the Row, so there will be lots of art to view and buy. There will also be catered food, wine tasting, and entertainment. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Arts Council. So come on out for a evening of fun and art. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
As promised, here is the second of the “Cherry Blossum” set. The two are pretty much alike, with a few changes here and there. Anyway, the set should look very good when matted and framed. I liked the contrast of the pink and white blossums with the blue background. Anyway, my client is happy, so that’s what counts. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Finally got a chance to work on a new piece this week. This is a watercolor on paper of cherry blossums. This is actually the first of a pair of paintings for a client. The other one should be done today. Then they will be matted and framed and hang together in my client’s home. These are 12×24, so they are a good size. They should make a great statement in the home. For more information, contact me. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
