2009 April
Here’s the first layer of color on the portrait. There is still much more to do to make the painting what I want. This is a pretty good start, though. There are lots of ways to approach a portrait, and I have chosen the “old Master’s” approach, with soft skin and form. Hopefully, the final product will be as beautiful as my subject. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s the finished drawing for the child’s portrait. I got in the clothing as well as the facial features. I’ve got the first layer on the painting done, so now it’s on to finishing it out. More on this later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s another example of “presentation” on artwork. This is a simple pencil wash drawing (using graphite and water to give it a soft, blended look) but when matted nicely and mounted in a great frame, it becomes very striking. This is perhaps the best example of how presentation makes even simple art a great addition to your environment. This piece is ready to go at $225. Come see it at the Studio in the Factory at Franklin, or contact me. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s another piece I have posted before, but now has a nice crimson mat and a striking wood frame. This is the kind of presentation that really makes the artwork a beautiful addition to your home or office. It becomes the artwork plus, and that’s the beauty of the artwork. It makes a tangible object that also adds beauty to your environment. That’s part of what owning art is all about. This piece available for $225.00 at the Studio at the Factory in Franklin, or contact me. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is a photo of the finished, framed piece I posted sometime back. This is a watercolor abstract piece on paper. We mounted it raised off the dark red mat, so the edges are floating in the glass. Then the nice rich wooden frame really sets off the colors. This kind of mounting makes the art work a truly striking addition to a home or office. This one is available for $350 at the studio, or contact me at jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is a drawing I am working on for a new portrait. This is for a client, and is her child. Beautiful child, and this should turn out to be a good portrait. The drawing is already working well. In fact, I really like the formed face in the outlined hat and such. Maybe I should just leave this as a drawing. Not. More later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is an oldie that I sold at the Christ the King Art Show last year. It’s still pretty good. For those of you who don’t know, Nashville has several bridges. The old Shelby Street Bridge was converted to a pedestrian bridge. From under the bridge you can see across the Cumberland River to downtown. The old bridge work makes for a perfect frame for the downtown skyline. This is also an unusual view of the city, and turned out really well. I have painted the downtown many times, and am happy to do so again, if anyone is interested in a custom painting of Nashville. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here’s the intermediate painting in the new figure series for this pose. The figure is looking good, with some good form. Again, the final versions of all these will be in about a week or two. This one is a 12×24 horizontal, and will have a nice frame when done. More later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is the intermediate stage on the second painting in the new series. I think this one is working along pretty well. The key feature is the braid of hair, and that is working pretty good. I think the cast shadow from the hair really makes the painting work. There are still details to be put in, and that will occur over the next couple of weeks. More on this one later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is the intermediate stage on the first of the figure paintings. I still have a lot to do, yet the piece is coming together pretty well. My goal on these is a really soft effect, and so far, that seems to be working. I still have some details and color adjustments to do, and will have the final version sometime in the future. In the meantime, to see the real thing in progress, come by the studio at the Factory in Franklin. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
