2009 January
I actually did get some painting done yesterday, and did a couple of underpaintings. Since they are just underpaintings, I didn’t want to post them yet. I did also get this drawing done of the Arcade in Nashville. The Arcade may have been the country’s first “mall” back at the turn of the 20th century. It’s still really cool, with the sky light and flags and all. I was standing on a chair taking photos, thinking I must look wierd and such. No one paid any attention. So I got some good photos and then spent about three hours on the drawing. I’ll get started painting this sometime in the future. Should be an interesting piece. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I have finally finished the seascape I showed earlier. I got the details on the reef a little sharper and made more warmth in the sky. I think it turned out pretty well. This is a fairly large piece, 20×24, so it’s a nice size for a good room. It is currently not framed yet, so is available unframed for $195. Come by and see it at the Factory in Franklin. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Like I said earlier, it seems like I have not had much time to actually paint lately. Instead, I do have a whole set of drawings ready to paint. This is not a complaint, since one of the reasons I have not been painting is that my teaching has really increased, which is great. I am so pleased that the interest in creating art is growing. As a culture and a species, we need to let our creativity out. And I am blessed to be able to help with that. So I’ll keep getting the drawings ready and paint when I can, and teach every chance I get. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
In addition to working on portraits more, I’m also trying to get out and do more paintings of Nashville. This building is on Jefferson Street at Fourth Avenue. It is a really neat old place, with the city in the background. So I got out there and did the work to get the drawing done. Now I’ll need to paint it. I’ve got several drawings done, and the color will come soon. Stay tuned. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Okay, it’s not a “people portrait,” but it is a portrait. This is one of my cats, Tipper, and she will be a challenge to paint, since she is largely a white cat. She has different color and shape eyes, so that will look odd, perhaps, to the viewer who doesn’t know her, but I think I can get that right. She is a sweet old girl, and I look forward to doing this, just for me. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
This one is not finished and I was hesitant to post it, but was tired of putting up old stuff. So I thought I would give a peep at what is going on. This one will have more detail on the reef part up front, and some other things. I may get it finished today or over the weekend, and will post the final version soon. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Okay, going with the portrait push I am making right now, I have done this one in pencil. I do a lot of drawing for the paintings, as I’ve occasionally posted, but don’t do a lot to just be drawings. So I thought I would work with that some. Here is one I did yesterday. I think it turned out okay. I’ll be doing more of this kind of thing as time goes on. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
This is an oldie that has been gone for a while. When I was looking in my archives for a painting to post this morning, I saw this. This was a painting of two good friends on the beach in Florida. I always thought this was a watershed moment in my art. This was one that really seemed to express how I felt about the scene and the people. So I’m happy that someone has this piece to look at everyday and enjoy. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I know I have posted this one before. It’s just a nice piece, and looking out on the soggy back yard half under water from all this rain, I thought, “What if this were snow?” And it would be really cool to have a good deep snow. We have not had one of those around here in years. So the best I can do is this painting. It’s a 16×20, nicely framed in a distressed dark bronze frame. Priced at $350, it’s a deal. I know times are tough, but art brightens up the tough times like nothing else. Also, don’t forget to check out the ads at the bottom of my page, thanks to Google AdSense. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
So I started out 2009 in a somewhat different direction: portraits. I have done some portraits before, but not a lot. So when I got a commission for this piece, I jumped on it. The reference photo was black and white, so I did the painting in a slightly sepia tone. The drawing is the underdrawing to show how it started out. Then the final version is filled in. I put this in a dark brown, almost black frame, that really pulls out the faces and warms up the black tones. I want to do more portraits this year, so if you have interest, contact me and we’ll discuss. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
