2009 January
It’s not all work at The Row at the Factory. We also celebrate birthdays. Even if we didn’t really want to, we would never pass up an opportunity to have cake. This week was Connie Shaw’s birthday. Connie has the Artisan Company next door to me. She was recently featured on Tennessee Crossroads. We had a good time singing Happy Birthday and generally celebrating all our friendships. Connie is seated. From left to right standing is Ann Bailey, Dorit Reilly, me, Lisa Casserly and Deborah Gall. Come out and share the fun with us at the Factory. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I still have not finished this piece, but here is the latest stage. I am actually thinking about trying to finish it today. We’ll see how my time goes. I am deliberately using this as a learning experience, since it is a protrait and I’m using acrylic. I think I may start another one in oil to compare the techniques. I’ll see. The thing about acrylics is that you work and work and think “this just isn’t working” and then, suddenly, there it is. So I’m not really at the “there it is” stage yet. I’ll keep plugging. More later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is an invitation to a new show I will be doing. It’s a one day show at the Brentwood United Methodist Church. Note that the show will be in the Buchanan House, which is directly beside the main BUMC building. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Church’s youth choirs. I have seen a partial list of the artists, and this should be a good show. Make plans to attend on February 21. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Something unusual for me: a watercolor painting. I had a request from a client for a soft winter watercolor scene, so I did this for her. I think it turned out pretty well. I’ve got a nice mat for it and a warm wood frame, so the final package should be very striking. I have not done a lot of these, but had so much fun doing this one I may do some more. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I’ve posted the various stages on this one before, so here is the final version. I think it turned out pretty well. I have some good contrast in the light and shadow on the building. The photo does not show it well, but there is a texture from the brick in the walls. One viewer at the studio thought it was a really good contrast of the old building and the whole “forges” thing against the backdrop of the modern city buildings. That may be one of the things that really drew me: how the past and the present intermingle all around us all the time. This piece is a 16×20, and I’ll get it framed. Price will be $375, framed. Come see it at the Factory in Franklin. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
One thing I don’t really mention much in my posts is teaching. I have been blessed to be able to share what knowledge I have with a number of great folks, and encourage them to create through paint. This is a shot of last Wednesday’s group at the studio at the Factory in Franklin. They all have a good time and hopefully learn a lot while creating something that they and others can enjoy. Being able to help with that is a true joy. Thanks to my students for wanting to create. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Oh, it’s January. The winter blues are upon me. That and I just don’t seem to have enough time for painting. So here is an oldie, although not that old, floral. This was from a photo taken by a good friend of mine, and the photo was great. That gave me a head start on the painting. I think the depth of field is good and that the petals disappear into the background well. This piece is still available at the studio. It’s a 16×20, very nicely framed for $425. Contact me. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
January is a tough month for me, for some reason. I have not completed much this month (except my little cat). I have a lot of stuff “in progress,” including this new portrait. Maybe if we can get out of the freezer, I can get more enthused. It is tough to be all excited when it’s 15 degrees outside. This is, after all, the South, and we’re just not used to this cold. Anyway, I’ll keep working on stuff and keep you updated. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
You may recall I posted the drawing for this neat old building last week. Here is the underpainting, or most of it. I still have a couple of windows to complete before I start putting in the trees and making the details come out. Looks like the piece may be a good one. Nice perspective on Nashville and some of it’s history. More later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I got my sweet little cat painted. I posted the drawing last week; now she’s got color. I think she really turned out well. She is so sweet (most of the time) and I think I got some of that it the painting. She’s not for sale, but I could do a pet portrait for you. Contact me for details and prices. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
