So to close out the week online, I thought I would put up this underpainting for a new commission Tuscan piece. This underpainitng is done in, pretty much, the complimentary colors, just like with the buildings. The sky is a little more like the final version than underpainted, but everything else is the opposite. The roof of the house will be red, for example, and the pines are green. The fields in front will be golden and so on. I think this one will turn out just fine. It’s a 24×48 for a space over a couch, and should really add to the new look of the customer’s house. Remember, redocorating with art is the really easy way to do it. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I thought about taking today off, but decided to post these pieces in progress and give thanks. These are the glaze layers I got on these two pieces yesterday. The Italian scene is starting to look good. I’ll add more color and work on making the walls look old and cracked for the next stage. I may be able to finish on that stage; not sure yet. The figure is looking really lively and soft, so that is working well. I’ll be off today and not painting, but will be back tomorrow with some new piece photos and then back in the studio. So I want to say how thankful I am that I am able to do something I have always dreamed of doing: creating art. I am also thankful for all of you and all the people in my life. And my dogs and cats, of course. So let’s all give thanks today for all that we have. We are all so blessed. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Following the plan from yesterday, here are two phases of another set of pieces. These are of old world buildings (there is another set I’ll show later). This one shows the drawing and the first underpainting in the complementary colors. The buildings are basically yellow/orange stucco, so they are blue in the underpainting. The sky is, well, sky, so it is orange in the underpainting. The plants are green, so they are red. All these are the complementary colors of the final version, and as you’ll see as I post the final versions, this gives greater depth to the painting. More later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I spent a lot of time the last few days at the studio on several new pieces, part of a large project for a house redecoration. Yes, art is a great way to redecorate your house. Anyway, since I am working on so many, I thought I would post them in the stages they have already been through. Of course, it may be like the proverbial “making sausage” stuff, but not quite as gross. Anyway, the first photo is of the drawing of this figure piece. The drawing is fairly detailed, and includes the lights and shadows. The second photo is of the complimentary underpainting. Colors opposite each other on the color wheel are complements, and doing an underpainting in the compliment gives the finished piece more depth. So the figure was green to start with. Then the last photo is the first layer of the final color. The figure already has a lot of depth and vibrancy, thanks to the complimentary underpainting. The final version will have a little more detail on the figure, and of course, the hair and background. I’ll post that as it comes together. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Those of you who did not go to the Cocoa Tree grand opening should tell yourselves this morning, “Wow, I really missed something.” Really, it was a wonderful event and very, very well attended. Bethany, who is seen with me in the first photo, is a true artist in chocolate. The samples I had were incredible. This is the piece I painted on site with chocolate, yes, real chocolate. I used dark, milk and white chocolate to do a painting of The Cocoa Tree from her logo, with some other stuff on it. This is real chocolate, and the material worked pretty well. The piece came out pretty well, and hopefully will be a nice addition to her space on 5th Avenue in Germantown. Go and get some of the best chocolate you’ll ever have. Oh, and see this neat piece painted with chocolate. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
No painting this morning, just an invitation. On Saturday, November 22, from 5-9 p.m., the Cocoa Tree will be holding a grand opening ceremony. Why does this involve me? Simple: I’ll be there doing a painting, in chocolate. Yes, I am creating something with melted chocolate. This should be interesting, fun and unpredictable. Plus, what I don’t use in the painting will be eaten! So come by for this. The Cocoa Tree is a superb custom chocolate house, and this should be yummy. The Cocoa Tree is located on 5th Avenue at Monroe, next to the Germantown Cafe in Nashville. Come by for fun and chocolate, oh, yes, and art! jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is a new abstract I completed this week. I had done a lot of the background some time ago, and finally finished it. I’ve called it “Coil,” based on the coil form in the lower middle of the piece. The coil seems to be interacting with the warmer orange shapes, which appear more organic. The colors are good and deep. Like most of the abstracts, this was done on unprimed canvas, so there are many deep layers of color in the piece. It’s a 20×36, so it’s pretty good sized but not overwhelming. Price will be $295, gallery wrapped. Come by and see it at the studio at the Factory in Franklin. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is another new little piece, as a companion for the vase piece I posted last week. This one is an 8×10 and is framed in a nice, classic frame. Very good colors and a lot of loose “painterly” brushstrokes. This makes for a very good piece to go in a relatively small place. Price is $125.00. Come by and see it at the studio in the Factory at Franklin, or contact me jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is another new landscape painting with poppies. The last piece like this (not the same scene, but similar) is already gone. This one is a little more detailed than the last, but still pretty soft and simple. This one is an 8×10 and framed in a classic frame. Price is $150. Come by and see it at the studio in the Factory at Franklin. jcannon1@bellsouth.net

I have actually done this scene just recently as a “painterly” painting. (See last week) This time I did it in the softer version that I like so much. I think this turned out better. At least, this is more my tastes. I’ve actually had several people respond positively to the other piece, so it really is just a matter of taste. My taste runs to this softer, more blended version. So maybe I should just do a lot of these kind of things in both styles. We’ll see. Anyway, this is a 9×12 and will be dry and framed later in the week. Come by and see it at the studio in the Factory at Franklin. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
