Yesterday was very busy for me. I did an interview for the Nashville Lifestyles magazine, which was really fun. The young lady asked some good questions that I had not really thought about before, so it took a good bit of time. Look for that in the September issue. As a result, all the painting I got done yesterday was this background for another of the abstracts. This background is much more like a stylized sky, and looks pretty cool on its own. I am not totally sure what is going on it yet, and I guess I’ll find out this afternoon when I start to paint. More later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
This is the last in this series of abstracts, at least for now. “Fullness of the Heart” is the title on this one. It features another form imposed on a sky like background. Here is another new abstract with the forms. This one is called “The Arrival.” Most of the artists at The Row at the Factory where I work think it has a science fiction feel. That’s okay; I grew up reading science fiction constantly, so that had to start coming out somewhere. In any event, this is a powerful piece. The photo again seems a little blue; there is more warmth in the original. This is a 24×36, so it’s fairly good sized. Price is $395, gallery wrapped. As promised last week, here is another of the series of abstracts that feature the tubular forms and the threads. This one is “Rupture” which should be clear from the form, which has a more industrial form, with the sense of breaks in the form. The forms are very vibrant, as are the colors and the background scheme. I confess that the colors in this photo really came out much more blue than in the real thing. Don’t know why. I have been really knocking these out; they have been just flowing from me. I probably need to take a break from them, though, since I don’t really want to burn out. I do have a new piece to post, but that will wait until Monday. Last night I was honored to win “Best Visual Artist” in the Tennessean’s Toast of Music City campaign. The ceremony as at the Country Music Hall of Fame, where I received the award. I am most honored and thank those who voted for me. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I spent yesterday teaching and doing business, so I did not get to paint anything new. As a result, this is an old piece, but one I like. Madison Art Center, now defunct, used to do a yearly event called “Paint the Town.” The artists went out on location and did pieces showing Nashville. This is one I did for that event. This is the Cohen Building on Church Street. It is a beautiful old Victorian, and it’s really neat since it is sandwiched between the Presbyterian Church and the Viridian Towers. It looks dwarfed in between those two, which makes it even more quaint. This piece sold quickly at the Paint the Town auction. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Since I don’t work at the studio on Mondays, and teach at Studio G on Tuesdays, I don’t have anything new to post this morning. So I thought I would put up this oldie called “On the Bridge.” I is an interesting figure piece. The lampost does not look so crooked in the original; something to do with the photo angle. You have to be a Nashville Predators fan to get the title. If you aren’t, here is the story: Chris Chelios is a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings. He’s No. 24. Whenever he comes on the ice in Nashville, the crowd chants “Chelios is a sissy!” So this piece, which I have been working on sporadically over the last few weeks, shows Chelios and Jason Arnott on the ice. I had posted a sketch or so on this. I have worked on the figures a little more. I’m not done with this stage yet. I need to get this finished. Anyway, here it is up to this stage. I got to work on this one over the weekend. This is another in the new series of abstracts featuring a loose background and the tubular features. This one is called “Pierced,” and has a somewhat wilder arrangement of the tubes. I think it’s done; I have not had a good chance to let it gel and come back to it. I’ll do that Wednesday. If there are any changes, it will only be modest, since I am pretty pleased with this one. This is a 24×36, so it’s pretty good sized. It is $375.00, plus tax. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I promised no more landscapes this week. This is the last in the series of 24×48 abstracts with the tubular structures embedded. I like this one a lot. The series has different effects on the objects. The first one has been described as like wire, the second cables and this one is organic, like roots. Hence, the title. I think they are all really different and striking. The could be used together or independently. They are not techinically a set, but have a similar theme.
