2008 June
This is the second piece in the set I started to show on Friday. I actually did not get to work on the third piece this weekend. I have a commission piece I am trying to finish, so that took priority. I’ll get to the third one of this later this week. This is “Connection 2,” and right now, the lines of light line up off center. The third piece will carry that on. I think these are turning out pretty well. I’ll see what you think after the last one is done. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
This is a new abstract I am working on. After seeing the “Color as Field” exhibit at the Frist Center for Visual Arts in Nashville, I wanted to experiment with acrylic on unprimed canvas. So this is one of the first of those. I like the faded in color in the background field, which comes from the paint soaking into the unprimed canvas. I’m not sure this one is finished, but like the look so far. More later. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I usually don’t include the frame in a post, but thought this would show how the framing helps a piece. This is a little landscape I did, a 5×7, that has that dreamy look I do so well. In the frame, it looks really cool. This is how most of my pieces look when framed. Thought you might like to see it. Price on this one is $145.00. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
This is another new abstract, “Phoenix Rising.” There is a wonderful gym in East Nashville called Gym 5, and the lobby has six maple wood panels. The wood is nice, but it needs some color. This piece is a trial piece to see if it sparks up the surfaces. The piece is pretty active, and pops really well. It’s also pretty big, 36×48, so it has a lot of presence. I’ll let you know if it works and if I do the rest of the set. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I had posted several versions of this painting, and this one is what I think is the final. I added the cool colors in the left foreground to counterbalance the warm lights of the mid-ground. This has been a tough piece to make look like the canyon and have some depth. I think this has come out okay. I know that next time I tackle the Grand Canyon, I’ll use a different viewpoint and make it more personal. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
This is a new three panel abstract set I completed on Saturday. “Cosmos” is the title. The panels are 24×36 and are gallery wrapped for hanging. I have them shown side by side, but they really should be separated by a foot or so, or can even be on different walls. They would look very striking in a neutral, yellow or yellow-orange room setting. Price on these is $595.00 for the set, plus tax. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I did spend a couple of more hours on the Franklin piece, and it looks really good now. But I knew you wanted something different, so I’m not posting that piece…yet. Instead, I have a good friend, Cindy Marshall, who is an excellent photographer. She has taken hundreds of photos at the Predators games, and I thought I would do some sports painting using them as a basis. This is the sketch for the first piece. I have not tried this kind of painting before, so it will be an interesting experiment. I’ll keep you posted on the progress. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
I know you must be getting tired of this one. It’s just been a big project. The piece is a 30×40, and has so much detail in it that it has taken me quite some time to get it down. This is almost the final version. This has to dry and I’ll put in the final details, a few highlights and shadows. So maybe I won’t post on this one again. I should have something different for tomorrow. We’ll see. Don’t forget to go to the Tennessean.com and vote for my on the Toast of Music City ballot. Thanks. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
This is a piece I don’t think I have ever posted. “Braid.” I had a model with this great hair. This was an experiment for me. It’s done on watercolor canvas, in acrylic, so it has a very soft look to it. I thought the effect was pretty cool. I still have this piece. It’s an 11×14, and unframed is $135.00. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
Here is another old piece that I have not shown in a long time. Called “On the Beach,” it’s another knife painting, with lots of texture. I still have it at the Studio. The upper area is smooth, and the rest is very textured and impasto. It gets a lot of comments, I think because of the texture. It’s a square piece, 18×18, and is priced at $375.00. Come by and see it. jcannon1@bellsouth.net
