This is part of another demonstration I am doing for my art classes.  The image on top is the underpainting of this simple still life setup.  The underpainting is done in the complementary colors of the final colors.  Then, thin glaze layers are added to the underpainting to acheive the final results.  The image below shows 2 such layers on the underpainting.  Notice that the colors are very subtle but vibrant in the glazed version.  This piece still needs a little highlighting and a few touches to finsh.  Even at this stage, you can see it’s got good color and is going to be nice.  This complementary color approach works very well.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

As you know, I have been working on this piece for some time.  My client has had major input into how the piece should look.  After all, she is the one who will be looking at it.  All in all, I think the changes have been good.  Now the piece has a more noticable foreground and mid ground.  The distant background has been good for a while.  So I think this is the final version.  Not sure yet, but will keep going until it is right.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

This is another new piece, that is almost finished.  It is of Carnton Cemetary in Franklin, a Civil War cemetary attached to Carnton, an antebellum house.  There is a good shadow feel to this, and while it is mostly done, I do want to check back with a few highlights here and there.   The piece is actually a 30×40, and is pretty large.  Framed, the piece will be $650.00.  This would be nice for someone who follows the Civil War or the history of Franklin.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

Hope everyone had a good holiday.  Here is a new piece that I just finished last week.  “On the Beach” is a beach scene, obviously.  The colors are really nice and soft, giving it a good feel for a sunset on the beach without making the sun an obvious part of the scene.  This piece is 24×48, and is framed in a very nice mahogany frame that has a linen liner and brass corner accents.  Price is $650.00, plus tax.  Come by and see it at the studio at the Row at the Factory in Franklin, 230 Franklin PIke.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

This is another commission piece I just got started.  This is the owner of the Corvette, and the car, of course.  I thought I would show this new approach I am using.  First, the drawing.  Then, and underpainting with colors that are the complement of the final colors.  That’s shown in the first photo.  Complementary colors are across from each other on the color wheel.  So the sky is orange, the car is orange, etc.  Then the second layer, after the first dries, is a light, thin coat with the final colors.  That’s the second photo.  As you can see, that gives a good effect to the images.  The final coat will be to do details and add color or shadows where needed.  I think this approach will work pretty well, especially for objects like this.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

This is another new piece, a commission I did for a nice couple.  They got married at the Church, which is on Main Street in Franklin, at “Five Points.”  The young lady commissioned me to paint this, and then gave it to her husband for an anniversary present.  I thought this was really thoughtful, since it is a unique and very personal sort of present.  Beats a card, etc.  Commissions of places or people that matter to someone make excellent gifts.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

I’ve been out of circulation for over a month now.  Sorry about that.  It’s a long story, but the short version is that the hard drive crashed, and it took quite a while to get it repaired and recapture the data.  Word to the wise:  “Back up.”  I learned my lesson the hard way.  Also during this time, you may have noticed that the website has been totally redesigned, and I am just now learning how to use the new features on the site.  I think it is very cool, and hope you do, too.  The work was done by JBL Works, LLC in Franklin, and I highly recommend them.

As to the new piece, this is a pretty large piece of Nashville from under the Shelby Street Bridge.  The bridge frames the skyline quite well.  This is a 36×18, so it’s a good size.  The colors are quite nice and would make a good piece for an office downtown.  Price is $495.00, framed.  Come by and see it at my studio in the Row at the Factory in Franklin.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net; 615-496-1259.
