I thought I would show you what I am working on.  This is a big abstract, which I think I mentioned before.  It’s 48×60, quite large.  I have about 75% of it done, or at least that much of the first layer.  I have incorporated geometric forms along with a lot of color and shadowing.  I think it’s looking pretty neat.  I will be working on it again this afternoon at my studio at the Row at the Factory in Franklin.  If you’re out, come by and see.  I will post today’s work tomorrow.  This piece is for Stonebridge Gallery.  We’ll see how it comes out.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

in_the_age_of_bronze.jpg

I promised a new piece; here it is.  This is a big abstract titled “In the Age of Bronze.”  There is actually a good bit of bronze metallic paint in the piece.  This is not the best photo, and it doesn’t show up the metallic elements very well.  This is a 48×48, so it’s pretty large.  It is also at Stonebridge Gallery (see their link).  This is right in the window, and draws a crowd.  I am proud to have Stonebridge represent me, and invite you to come to their shop at the Factory and view this piece as well as their entire collection.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

No new works this morning.  Turns out it was a wild weekend.  The Factory hosted a wine tasting festival, which was a fund raiser for Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and I stayed until almost 10 p.m. Friday night.  Lots of folks, lots of good conversations, and a couple of pieces went home with folks.  So I didn’t get much done.  Saturday was also busy, and I did start a new abstract, a big one.  I got a roll of really good unprimed canvas from my friends at Plaza Art Supply in Nashville, and it took me a while to get the thing built and gessoed.  Four courts on a 4′ by 5′ canvas takes awhile.  So what I have put on this morning is a piece I did last year for “Paint the Town” at the Madison Art Center.  This is the First Baptist Church and the Customs House at 7th and Broad.  And me.  I was pretty happy with this piece.  Anyway, I will be working on the new one today and should have at least a progress report by tomorrow.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net

This is another old piece.  Okay, it’s been a bad week.  I was in an accident Monday and did not go to the studio Wednesday, so I have not painted this week.  If I don’t paint or draw or do something everyday, I get frustrated, so this afternoon I will be in the studio slinging paint like crazy.  Anyway, this is an older piece.  It’s quite large, about a 30×40, and framed in a beautiful antique wood.  The scene is not real; it’s a collage of Venice and Marseilles.  I painted the majority of it with a knife, so it has a lot of texture.  Very interesting piece.  It’s priced at $1,050.00, framed.  It’s in my studio at the Factory at Franklin, so come by and see it.  By next week, I should have some new pieces to put up.  Thanks.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net.

playing_for_the_tip_jar.jpg

This is actually an old piece.  I say old, I think I painted it last winter.  It’s called “Playing for the Tip Jar.”  Kind of that stuff where guys jam at a joint and split the tips.  Lots of that used to happen in New Orleans.  We have not been back since Katrina, so I don’t know about now.  This piece is part of the Gallery at 417 Union Restaurant, so if you are in downtown Nashville, go by and check these out.  The gallery part is upstairs.  Enjoy.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net 615-496-1259

the_valley.jpg

This is a new landscape, “The Valley.”  It has a really good sky in it.  My landscapes are usually a little soft and this one is no exception.  The colors are muted, which is a bit of a departure for me.  Still, it has a nice feel to it.  It’s a 12×16, framed for $200.00.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net 615-496-1259

in_a_distant_land.jpg

This is a brand new one I did yesterday, called “In a Distant Land.”  This is an oil abstract, the first one of these I have done in a while.  I have been doing all my abstracts in acrylic lately, and really wanted to get back to this style.  There are thematic elements in this one, and allusions to a number of things, like a meteor shower, a distant city, waterfalls.  I am really happy with this piece.  It is a 30×40.  Price, unframed, is $500.00.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net 615-496-1259

landscape_with_tree.jpg

This is a new little piece.  “Landscape with Tree.”  Kind of old school for me.  Lots of movement in the sky; lots of clouds.  Kind of a soft feel to the midground trees, and then the partial foreground tree.  Kind of an old favorite composition.  I love doing skies, as you can see from my landscapes, so often the sky is really the focus.  The land only frames the sky.  Anyway, this is a 12×16 piece, presently unframed.  $90.00 unframed.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net 615-496-1259

I’m really not repeating myself with this one.  There is another piece I did similar to this piece.  A client really liked that piece, but wanted a big one for her office.  So I did a similar piece on a much bigger size.  The original was a 20×20.  This one is 48×48.  That’s really big and makes a strong statement.  She liked the colors of the original, so that’s what I used. This particular piece and method will work with different colors, so it’s perfect for a custom commission.  Contact me.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net 615-496-1259

I put the first draft of this guitar on the site last week.  My client sent me photos of the actual guitar, so I redid the piece to make it look like the real one.  Turns out that a 1952 Fender Telecaster that has been in constant use for 55 years does not look much like a brand new one off the Fender website.  Who would have thought?  So anyway, I added the scratches and nicks and discolorations and left off a knob that has long since gone bye-bye.  I am pretty pleased with this.  There is a little more to do on the headstock, but otherwise this piece looks pretty good.  This is just a reminder about commissions:  I do them, so contact me.  jcannon1@bellsouth.net
